It’s The Keighleys, everyone’s favourite event to get angry at! Whether it’s the lack of exciting announcements, winners being rushed off stage, or the outrageous celebrity cameos, you cannot deny that The Game Awards is a spectacle.
I enjoy watching The Game Awards as an end-of-year celebration, reflecting on my experiences this past year, and getting excited about the future. I’ve accepted that what I’m looking for in an Awards Show won’t be found at TGAs, and it’s more of an all-encompassing show than a ceremony to celebrate developers. I go into more detail in my video on The Game Awards, which you can find below.
Industry chatter has promised a stacked show, and Geoff hasn’t downplayed it yet. As much as people batter Geoff for anything they can, he’s usually pretty honest when setting people’s expectations for announcements. This can only mean there are a few heavy hitters on the way.
What those hitters are is anyone’s guess. But I’ll try!
Atlus
It feels like it’s about time for some Persona news. Atlus has had an incredible year between Persona 3 Reload, Shin Megami Tensai V: Vengeance and Metaphor: Refantazio. The modernisation of P3 is an absolute joy, and it only gets me more excited for new Persona. Is it Persona 6 time? Maybe.
Rumours have swirled about the sixth instalment for a few years, but we’ve still not had anything concrete except the subtle tease of the colour green in the anniversary artwork. Persona 6 would be a massive reveal, but I’d settle for news on a smaller spin-off title, like a Persona 5 Fighting game or a sequel to Persona 5 Strikers. Maybe even Persona Kart?
Resident Evil
After Resident Evil 7‘s success in 2017, fans of the franchise were treated to an onslaught of RE games and content, including RE Village and the remakes of RE 2, 3, and 4. Recently, however, Capcom has been silent on the Resident Evil front. Barely a word has been spoken since the release of the Separate Ways DLC for Resident Evil 4 Remake in September 2023.
Monster Hunter is Capcom’s priority until March 2025, but it wouldn’t shock me if a teaser for a future Resident Evil title scheduled for mid-to-late 2025 were shown. Another remake? Resident Evil 9? A spin-off title? Who knows. Whatever it is, I’m sold if it keeps the focus on survival horror. A Jill Valentine appearance would be nice, too!
Kojima
Of course, you can’t have TGAs without Hideo Kojima. I’d love to hear more about “OD”, but we’re more likely to get information on Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. Unless he decides to announce another new game deal, this time with Nintendo. I wouldn’t put it past him!
Nintendo
Speaking of Nintendo, there’s only one thing I’m interested in hearing about now—Switch 2—and I don’t think they’d use The Game Awards to reveal it. New hardware is traditionally shown on the company’s terms. Maybe there’s a chance of a teaser, but I highly doubt it. If there’s nothing Switch 2 to show, I don’t want to hear from Nintendo.
Sonic
With the hype of Sonic Movie 3 and the positive reception to Sonic x Shadow Generations, SEGA will undoubtedly cash in on more Sonic. Fall Guys clone Sonic Rumble is in the works but isn’t launching on consoles; therefore, the floor is open for a different title. Sonic Frontiers 2 is probably further out, but I could see another remaster/collection appearing (Sonic Heroes or Shadow the Hedgehog is the dream).
Silent Hill
Konami and The Game Awards have a storied past, but with Silent Hill 2‘s five nominations, the door is wide open for a Konami announcement. I’d love to see Silent Hill 2’s Born From a Wish DLC or updates on Silent Hill: Townfall or Silent Hill F.
Silksong
I think most people have given up waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong, which is precisely why I can see it popping up here. You know Geoff would love to be the one to pull the trigger on a release date reveal.
PlayStation
PlayStation’s future is unknown outside Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Wolverine, and Ghost of Yotei. It may be time for one of the many studios under the PlayStation Studios banner to show off some work. At the very least, I’d expect some news on Astro Bot DLC.
Remedy
Against my better judgment, I will suggest Remedy has something to show. It’s probably too soon for Control 2 news, but Sam Lake is in the building to present an award, so maybe there’s a chance. I’d take a cinematic teaser! There’s also the Max Payne 1 and 2 remake with Rockstar. Perhaps a teaser for that is more plausible. It’s not like Rockstar has anything else they want to show off…
The Game Awards: Picks and Predictions
As for the Awards themselves, here are my picks (left) and predictions (right).
With some fierce categories and the promise of bombshell announcements, I reckon this year’s TGA show will be a good one. I’m not going to set my expectations too high, though. It’s easier to enjoy it that way. Let’s let Geoff Keighley take us all on a ride. Regardless of the final destination, I bet the journey will be fun enough.
Just no “Please wrap it up” nonsense this year, Geoff.
